Established in 1807 and named for Revolutionary War hero John Rhea, the county has been shaped by industry, faith, and civic progress. From its early role in river commerce along the Tennessee River to its contributions during the Civil War and the rise of regional education, Rhea County’s legacy is woven into the broader fabric of East Tennessee. Best known as the site of the landmark 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial,” Dayton’s historic courthouse still stands as a symbol of American dialogue and progress. Today, the Rhea County Museum & Scopes Trial Exhibition preserves this legacy, offering an intimate look at the county’s people, industries, and defining moments through authentic artifacts and exhibits that bring its history to life.
